Meaningful Moments at the Du Quoin State Fair

IDEC Agency News – Wednesday, September 9, 2026

A chance to listen, connect, and learn along the way

IDEC’s first visit to the Du Quoin State Fair was more than another stop on the calendar. It quickly became an opportunity for staff to connect with families and experience firsthand the importance of showing up across the state.

Between the sights and sounds of the fairgrounds, our staff had the opportunity to introduce IDEC in a personal way, not simply by sharing information, but by listening, connecting and learning from the people. A quick question turned into a longer conversation. A family stopping by to pick up information and shared their experiences. And every interaction was another reminder that the work of building stronger early childhood services is through systems of people that work together informed by policies that govern programs.

“There was something special about representing a brand-new state agency at the Du Quoin State Fair. We are still building awareness of IDEC”, said IDEC team member Erin Von Holten. “Every conversation felt like an opportunity to introduce ourselves, listen, help navigate their need, and start building trust.”

As our time at the Du Quoin State Fair closed, our team left with much more than photos, fair memories and a few favorite moments from the week. They left affirmed with purpose from the stories people shared, questions families brought to the booth, conversations with providers and community members. And our appreciation for the importance of being present in the communities we serve is renewed.

As we continue through our first year as a state agency, we look forward to carrying those connections with us and finding even more opportunities to show up, listen and be part of communities throughout Illinois. Du Quoin gave our team plenty to remember and even more to look forward to.
